Hello and goodbye
There is a very young woman who's cube is across from mine, she's the person who has been orienting me to how things are done by them and the study that I've been given. I'm own my own and only have a few questions and that's good since she announced at Tuesday's meeting that she's leaving for another position. Ok, what is going on, or has been going on at this place. Maybe it's just coincidental but this is a small department and four of the six permanent people have just left and so has the boss. One person left shortly after we arrived and she said that she had been there to get some experience and now was moving to a shorter commute . The others where already gone when the other contractor and I got there.
The one that's leaving now hasn't said anything but she's really quiet anyway. Our direct manager is there as a consultant, she's a contractor as well I guess. She said that the company had asked her to come back as a consultant after the previous manager left. She has a long history with the company and most of it was with this department or a related one. I remember her from when I worked on a contract at a CRO that was bought out by this company. Which is how she ended up working for them. In fact there are a couple of people who are still at this CRO who were with the previous one. More about that later...
Only a couple of comments have been made about anything that happened prior to our arrival. At the meeting last week someone made a comment about the previous manager's style of management. This was met immediately by look from the current manager that shut her up. Then the manager said in passing that when she arrived the department seemed kind of quiet and now it seemed to be picking up. That caused the other contractor and I to speculate that maybe the department wasn't performing up to speed and upper management may have applied pressure. They didn't seem pressured when we arrived. I don't think they are very busy but everyone's perception is different.
Anyway the two of us have been speculating about whether the two remaining permanent people will leave. We're certain that one won't. She is obsessive- compulsive and arrives at work like 6:00am and doesn't leave until who knows when (I am long gone before her). She is ensconced in that cube and doesn't leave all day. So thin you think anorexic when you see her. Talks incessantly in minute detail . Thank goodness she's mentoring the other contractor. The other contractor is having a hard time dealing with her. Partly because she's coming from a position where she was just laid off and really needs permanent work. So her anxiety level is high. More about that later... The other person just got married for the second time the first weekend after we arrived and went on her honeymoon. She just built a new house (a terrible commute), now has five children in the combined household and the new hubby. We think she's stuck, probably won't add another new thing to the plate right now but you never know. She says hi in the morning and that's basically the extent of the conversation for the day. I said to the other contractor that she is probably the only person I talk to all day when we have lunch. More about that later...
Anyway we had a laugh at lunch yesterday when I jokingly said that well if they leave we'll be in charge of the department. She said that's what happened to her at her last job. Everyone left and she was left holding the bag. They expected her to do all the jobs. She's bitter about the lay-off and says she would never go back if they called her back they handled it so badly. Now she's worried because she hasn't gotten her severance pay despite her lawyer's intervention. The company's stock has gone right down the tubes despite getting their NDA approved by the FDA. I tried to tell her they are out of money, broke and it may be a long time before she gets any money if ever. I think she knows that but hasn't accepted it, after all it's only been a month and a half since she was laid off.
There is another contractor a student, whose mom works in another department. She is doing data entry and is under a deadline, the database is due to be locked down. She's been there about two weeks and will be there until the end of the summer. Two new contractors are starting Monday and we joked that we'll be orienting them to the department. It's the weekend enough of this for now.
